Theatres and/of machines

In our third session we will begin from the understanding that the world was conceived of as both a ‘machine’ and a theatre in early modern culture. At the same time that machinic techniques were pivotal to developments in theatrical arts, a growing curiosity for the spectacles of mechanical invention is indexed by the popularity of illustrated books known as ‘theatres of machines’. Machines take centre stage, while they are are also at work behind the scenes.
